Clyde Haulman earned his BA, MS and Ph.D. from Florida State University and joined the Department of Economics at the College of William and Mary in 1969. Since then, he has been a noted scholar and administrator. With interests in the early economy of the United States, American economic thought, and Chinese economic reforms, he has published in numerous economics journals and his latest book, Virginia and the Panic of 1819, was published in 2008. Current research includes analysis of antebellum US business cycles and the development of American political economy. Professor Haulman has been honored as a Fulbright Senior Lecturer to the People’s Republic of China (1986-87), as a Distinguished Fulbright Scholar at the Hong Kong - America Center, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (1993-94), and as Scholar in Residence at the Virginia Center for the Humanities and at the Commonwealth Center for the Study of American Culture. Professor Haulman also has served the College as Dean of Undergraduate Studies, Chair of the Department of Music, Assistant to the President, Director of the Marshall-Wythe Institute for Social Research, and as Chair of the Department of Economics. He has had an important impact on the College’s Reves Center for International Studies, the American Studies Program, and the Sharpe Community Partnership Program. Recipient of the College’s prestigious Thomas Jefferson Award (2002) and Prentice Award (2011), Professor Haulman has also received the President’s Award for Service to the Community, and in 2004 was elected a member of Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. In addition to serving on numerous local and regional boards and commissions, his current community activities include serving a third term as an elected member of the Williamsburg City Council and Mayor of the City of Williamsburg. Married to Fredrika Teute, an early American historian who is Editor of Publications at the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture, he has one daughter who has her Ph.D. in History from Cornell and is a faculty member at American University.
